Networked Workers: A Pew Internet Report

Washington, September 24, 2008. A new national survey [conducted by Mary Madden and Sidney Jones] shows that 62% of adults who are currently employed use the internet or email at work and they have mixed views about the impact of technology on their work lives.

On the one hand, they cite the benefits of increased connectivity and flexibility that the internet and all of their various gadgets afford them at work. On the other hand, many workers say these tools have added stress and new demands to their lives.

This survey also finds that 96% of those who work use the internet, email or have a cell phone for some purpose in their lives, even if those things are not specifically tied to work. We call this largergroup "Wired and Ready Workers." When they are asked about the impact of
these technologies on their work lives:

* 80% say these technologies have improved their ability to do their job.
* 73% say these technologies have improved their ability to share ideas with co-workers.
* 58% say these tools have allowed them more flexibility in the hours they work.

A Lightweight Metadata Quality Tool

Hoy damos a conocer una herramienta de calidad para utilizar con metadatos, particularmente el Dublin Core, en el medio virtual.

La misma fue elaborada por David M. Nichols, Chu-Hsiang Chan, David Bainbridge, Dana McKay y Michael B. Twidale. A lightweight metadata quality tool fue presentada en la 8va Conferencia Conjunta de ACMI/IEEE-CS sobre Bibliotecas Digitales, efectuada en Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, en el 2008.

Investigación Cualitativa; Taller en el DEGI/UPR

El expositor será el Dr. Harry Wolcott, de la Universidad de Oregon, cuyos libros son utilizados en las universidades en Puerto Rico para guiar el análisis de trabajos de investigación cualitativa.

El taller se ofrecerá el viernes, 26 de septiembre de 2008, en el horario de 8:00AM - 3:00PM. El costo de inscripción es de $50 para profesores y $35 para estudiantes, e incluye merienda, almuerzo y certificado de asistencia.

Promoting the Library, SPEC Kit 306, Published by ARL

Washington DC. September 15, 2008. --The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published Promoting the Library, SPEC Kit 306, which provides an overview of the promotional efforts that ARL member libraries are undertaking.

Research libraries expend considerable effort to communicate why they are vital to students, faculty, and researchers. They continually promote their potential to enhance teaching and learning, to facilitate research with appropriate resources and expertise, and to gain credibility in a world that competes for the information consumer's attention. But exactly what promotional activities and objectives are today's research libraries pursuing? Who organizes them, how are they evaluated, and what challenges do they face? This SPEC survey sought to answer these questions.

The survey was distributed to the 123 ARL member libraries in February 2008; 87 libraries completed the survey for a response rate of 71%. All of the responding libraries indicated that they currently engage in some form of promotional activities. Sixty-four percent of the responding libraries indicated that they have at least one library staff member with "promotion" as part of his/her position description. These positions typically report to library administration and are charged with strategic planning, media relations, and guiding the communications vision. However, they are usually not involved in the day-to-day promotional activities of their libraries.

The survey responses indicated that day-to-day promotional activities are handled by a wide array of committees, task forces, and ad hoc groups. These teams tend to be interdepartmental and focus on hosting events, developing print and Web materials, fundraising, and other outreach-related duties. Similarly, respondents indicated that individual departments and branch libraries typically produce their own material to increase awareness and explain particular services.

The survey results also show which skills these staff need, how they decide which promotional activities to pursue, what their objectives are, how the activities are funded, and more. Descriptions of a wide variety of promotional activities are included, as well.

This SPEC Kit includes documentation from respondents in the form of marketing plans, job descriptions, and promotional materials.

Presenta una herramienta efectiva para seleccionar recursos electrónicos gratuitos de calidad y ofrecerlos a la comunidad académica de la UNAM por medio de su biblioteca digital. Se describen los pasos esenciales para crear una estrategia razonada que permita decidir sustentadamente qué recursos digitales gratuitos se deben incluir en portales académicos. La herramienta consiste en un instrumento de evaluación dividido en criterios de fondo y de forma enfocados a cada tipo de recurso digital como libros, bases de datos, revistas, material de consulta y sitios de interés.

Presents an effective tool that allows the selection of quality free electronic resources and offer them to the academic community of the UNAM by means of its Digital Library. The essential steps are described to create a reasoned strategy that allows to decide what digital resources should be included in academic web sites and the reasons of such selection. The tool is an evaluation instrument with form criteria and content criteria, focused in several digital resources such as books, data bases, journals, libraries, reference materials and sites of interest.

Libraries Connect Communities: Public Library Funding and Technology Access Study 2007-2008

Este estudio, titulado las Bibliotecas conectan comunidades, subvencionado por la Fundación de Bill y Melinda Gates y la Asociación Americana de Bibliotecas, en su segunda realización, continúa la investigación de encuestas previas llevadas a cabo por John Carlo Betot, Charles R. McClure, y otros, desde el 1994.

La investigación presenta datos recolectados a través de tres enfoques integrados: una encuesta nacional que allega información sobre la conectividad de la Internet, el uso, los servicios, los fondos y la sostenibilidad de las bibliotecas públicas; un cuestionario enviado a los Oficiales principales de las Agencias Estatales de Bibliotecas (COSLA- Chief Officers of State Library Agencies); y el desarrollo de grupos focales con visitas llevadas a cabo en cuatro estados: Nueva York, Carolina del Norte, Pennsylvania y Virginia.

El informe amplía la información relacionada con la dificultad que tienen las bibliotecas públicas para proveer acceso a la Internet y a otras tecnologías, y alerta sobre la sostenibilidad a largo plazo y la calidad futura del acceso libre a la Internet y a otras tecnologías.
